Though it could be said that these days, a job is no longer for life, a great deal of people still find themselves getting stuck in one particular role in their work and waking up one day to realise that they have indeed performed in the same type of position for many a year, without advancing in their career.
This is especially easy when you have a family you provide for and responsibilities, which encourage you to believe that change would not be useful when you have so many people relying on you.
Yet, in terms of job satisfaction, staying in a role which you have no passion or enthusiasm for is perhaps one of the biggest mistakes you can make. It’s also not fair to you as a human being at all.
If you find yourself in a similar situation and are desperate to make a change, there are many ways you can turn your work life around and begin doing something you enjoy, rather than feel it a chore.
Refresh Your Qualifications
First things first, dig out your CV and scrutinize your qualification status. When people sit in the one job for a lengthy period of time, they often fail to realize the value of continuous training both practically and educationally. Consequently, when it comes to making a move, they then recognize that they have nothing recent in the way of training and new qualifications to show to a new employer.
Have a scout round of the current job market and see what are amongst some of the more commonplace qualifications and skills being asked for. Then, once you know what job type you want to strive for, make an effort to start getting the relevant requirements to add to your CV.
Speak to Your Current Employer
Perhaps you have been sitting in the same position for some years now because you just don’t see a further placement or opening for you in your current company. However, just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean you should just assume this avenue is a dead end.
Before you make any plans to move, have a word with your current employer and discuss how you are open to now taking on new challenges and responsibilities. Prepare yourself to give them a little speech about what you’re worth to the business and promote what you could do with added responsibility.
They may be able to recommend a selection of internal roles which you can progress to – they may not. However, you won’t know unless you ask!
Look Around at Different Companies
If you don’t get anywhere with your current company or you fancy a significant change, why not look elsewhere and consider taking your skills to a new company much further afield?
Quanta believe that sometimes an entirely new different location and a change of scenery can be all that is needed to enhance your career, and the prospect of beginning again in a totally new environment is indeed one well worth looking into.
